Ever since moving to Philadelphia in 2007, I’ve noticed that Philadelphians have their own sense of style; set apart from any of the other major cities in the Northeast. Being from Northern New Jersey, I grew up thinking that New York was the end all, be all when it came to fashion, but seeing, living, and breathing in this city for the past four years has opened my eyes to a whole new fashion scene. Both men and women from Philadelphia are immediately identifiable by their wardrobe; but I have to admit that at times, I feel like the men are the real trendsetters in this city. As I seek to delve deeper into the Philly fashion scene, I had the pleasure of recently interviewing fellow stylist and fashion writer Sabir Peele who is no exception to this rule; personifying what it means to be flawlessly fashionable.
As a North Philadelphia native, Mr. Peele said he always realized that he would be destined for a career involving fashion.
“For years my friends have always asked me what they should wear when going to parties, formal events, first dates and so on. The one big thing that people always wanted to know is how they could look great on a budget. As you know, men’s clothing is not typically cheap, but, there are ways to purchase things in a very cost effective manner that I wanted people to see and style be very stylish; working in a professional setting as a young man, I’ve seen far too many guys butcher outfits just because they don’t know the basics.”
Not only has Mr. Peele has been able to give styling tips to his friends personally, but through his blog, Men’s Style Pro, he has and is able to give fashion tips and pointers to the very gentlemen that he speaks of.
Being named one of the 5 Best Dressed Real Men in America by Esquire Magazine in Sept.2010, it is obvious that Peele is very knowledgeable about the world of fashion and what it takes to be considered a well dressed man by anybody’s standards. He advises men to pay attention to the fit of a garment, as well as quality detailing in its assembling; because it’s a fact that if article of clothing is made well, it will last a life time and if the fit is spot on it will look fantastic every time it is worn.
As for his thoughts on who does Menswear well? Sabir states that Michael Bastian, Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford are three of his favorite designers for very simple reasons. Bastian and Lauren top his list because they do the classic American look with European influences that make men’s clothing look phenomenal. Also, Tom Ford rounds out the top three because of the attention paid to what the elegant male should look like when dressed, making him one of the top designers in the business.
